Review by Leo
In the same
straight-from-the-shoulder, no-spin style that has made his daily
program one of the most watched talk shows on television,
journalist/author O'Reilly
offers advise to teenagers on school, friends, teachers, sex,
drugs, death, parents,
and more in this quick-read paperback.
He calls it a guidebook---about not necessarily what's right and
what's wrong, but about
finding the courage and will power to be who you really are.
About standing up for yourself.
And most importantly, about using your head.
Peppered with anecdotes from his own life and thought-provoking
questions, this book
leads a reader to common sense summations the author calls
O'Reilly's Rules.
SAMPLES:
(on music madness) "Life passes quickly, and a mind is a
terrible thing to waste. Rock on,
but do it as recreation, not as an escape from the real world you
have to live in."
(on TV) "..watching TV excessively rarely pays off. It
can actually prevent you from growing up."
(on smoking) "Smoking is a scam."
(on cheating) "Cheating...is an addiction of the weak. The
person who cheats will cheat you."
(on death) "Don't fear it. Instead, make death a motivator:
as long as you're breathing, be
as alive as you can be."
The father of two young children himself, O'Reilly calls this
book a survival guide. He's
qualified to write it, he says, because: "I've never
forgotten what it was like to be a teenager.
No one ever does."
This book is a winner---both for adolescents who are trying to
cope, and the adults who love
and care for them.
