Impact  by Kayla Harris,  Richmond, VA       Apr09   nov07

I believe that the choices I make positively or negatively impact my future. In transition from teen to adulthood, I am going to encounter many obstacles and it is my choice to let them have a positive or negative impact on my future.

As I have gotten older, I have learned that the choices I make can impact my future. From watching friends and family, I have seen and heard the many wrong choices  that they have made. Most of them regret the wrong choices and encourage me to do the exact opposite. They tell me that there is so much ahead for me in the future and there is no reason for me to waste it on bad choices that I have control over. As I become a young adult, my parents have started giving me more freedom.  I have learned to think about how situations that I am in can have an impact on my future.

As I watch the news and hear about teens getting arrested for drunk driving, drug possession and other similar things, I wonder how they feel when they are hiding what they are doing from their parents and if they will be sorry when their parents find out. I wonder if they are making these choices because they are mad.  I also wonder if these teens care about their futures and the consequences of their actions.

I have to admi t that although the mistakes that other people make have nothing to do with me, I sometimes get frustrated. I start asking myself questions like, what were they thinking? and how stupid could they be? Then after asking all those questions I just hope the best for those people. I hope that they will see the type of damage they are causing to their future. Sometimes they realize what they are doing and in the end they have just screwed up their life and everything that they could have worked for goes down the drain.

I believe that people make choices that best suit them, regardless if they have a positive or negative impact on their future. Although I feel as though some people make bad choices, I have to remind myself that the person made that choice for himself and that it will only positively or negatively affect their lives.

There are many choices that I can make that can negatively impact my future.  One example of a choice that could have a negative impact on my future is low self-esteem. If I had low self esteem, I would not c are about what happens to me, how people treat me, and other similar things. Nothing would faze me; it would really show my family and all the loved ones around me that I don’t care about anything including them or myself.

I have decided that I want to make choices that will positively impact my future.  I believe that if I have a positive self-esteem, it will have a huge positive impact on my future. I have learned to make choices that best suit me. This involves having a positive self-esteem. Since I have made the choice to have good self-esteem, I feel great about myself and most of the choices I have made. In my personal opinion, having a positive self-esteem makes making choices easier. I say this because I can confidently say that I know right from wrong. I know that the choices I make can have some effect on my future.

Choices are tough to make and when I make a bad one, I regret it.  At that I am taking charge and saying to myself that it was a20bad decision that I will not make next time, but more importantly, I will learn from my mistakes.  While growing up and attending school my parents have made choices for me and my sister that have had a great positive impact on our futures. I do not plan on wasting the great sacrifices they have made for me. If these sacrifices had not been made, things would probably be different in my life. My parents made a positive choice that had a positive impact on my sister and me.

As I continue to pursue life, I will remember the lessons my family taught me and the sacrifices they made for me.  My future is very important to me. I will be successful, and will not waste any of the knowledge that my mentors have given me.  I want to make a difference in the world and my community. I want to make choices that will positively impact on my future, my loved ones, and the world.
