Gone      by Aryonna Holmseth, Ramsey, MN           May08

Tibby was walking out the door to meet her friends at the local arcade.  She made her way to the driveway when near the end, she looked over to her neighbors' house.  It was a habit of hers.  Mindy and Thomas Red looked worried and heart broken.  Tibby sprinted over to meet and help them through their problem.  They told her that the cops had arrived there around 7:00 AM.  It was now 8:30.  Mindy told Tibby that their little girl, Cindy, was missing.  The cheif walked up with a disappointed look after talking to the deputy.  "I'm sorry, ma'am.  Your daughter hasn't shown up anywhere we looked.  We can only assume that she's dead."  The word, dead, seemed to linger in their minds.  Tibby couldn't believe it.  She wouldn't allow herself to.  She called her friends and told them she wouldn't be coming to their little get-together today.  She needed a moment of peace.
The next morning, Tibby woke to the thought of Cindy gone forever.  She knew that she might not find Cindy, but she had to try for Cindy's family.  It was time to get up and start looking for her, but where?  All of a sudden, Cindy appeared out of nowhere.  Tibby didn't believe it.  She closed her eyes, and then Cindy disappeared.  Tibby was just hoping Cindy being there was true.  Tibby looked all around seeing if what had happened, really happened and then found something.  It was a piece of paper with a man's name on it, 'Jonathan Who'.  Maybe this was a sign or clue to her investigation.  Tibby sat at her home the whole day thinking over what it meant, and what to do about it.  At 10:00 PM, she slowly dozed off still pondering what she was to do.
Next thing she knew, it was Friday morning and the sun was shining on Tibby's face.  Remembering that the night before she started thinking about the paper and decided she had something to do; she chose to go look up the name on it.  She found the address in the phone book and went over to his house to talk to him and find out anything about Cindy.  When she got there, he was gone.  "What do I do now?!" she asked herself.
Mindy was still upset.  She didn't know what to think.  "Was Tibby dead, too?" she questioned herself.  Thomas was sitting on the couch watching TV.  "She'll show up sooner of later. Stop worrying.  We will find her!"  Pacing back and forth, Mindy just kept quiet.  She was hoping Thomas was right and that they'd have their Cindy back, safe and sound.
It was late and Tibby was staying in a hotel room.  Cindy showed up again. Before the little girl had left without a word, but now she had a chance to talk with her.  Tibby asked Cindy why she kept running off, and why she had left her parents.  Cindy told her everything and Tibby was crying by the end of Cindy's explanation.  She needed to report this to the police.  On the other hand, she didn't want to end up like Cindy.  She stayed up thinking, then decided what she would report to the cops and Mr. and Mrs. Red in the morning.  Again, she hadn't gotten much sleep.  She'd woken up too many times in the middle of the night.
Cindy's parents were worrying more and more as the days passed.  Even Thomas.  They didn't know what they were going to do.  They didn't know Tibby's cell phone number, so they couldn't get any updates on what was happening.  They were about to go search for Cindy and Tibby themselves when the phone rang.  It was Tibby and she said everything Cindy had told her.  They just told Tibby that she needed more sleep.  Tibby was also too stressed.  She told them she wouldn't rest until she had gotten everything resolved.
Tibby arrived at the police station and told the cheif everything that she knew.  Of course he didn't believe her either.  She asked him to go over to the Reds' house with her and see if they knew who Jonathan Who was.  He said that he would and they were to leave the next morning.  The next morning, the officer called her hotel number, which she had given him the night before.  They left for the Reds' house to ask them about Jonathan.  When they arrived, it was the first thing that they asked.  Thomas had no clue who he was and looked over at Mindy, who kept quiet.  They all knew she had something to say.  They kept questioning her until she spoke up.  Tibby, the police officer, and Thomas discovered that Jonathan Who was Mindy's ex-husband.  She had a restraining order against him, too.  They were all shocked, except for Thomas, but on top of that, she told them that he was Cindy's real father.  They called Jonathan and had he come to talk with them, too.  He actually came and admitted that he took her because he had missed her.  He hadn't seen her since she was two years old, and wanted to see her again.  Mindy jumped out of her seat and demanded to know where she was and to have Jonathan arrested.  He told Mindy, "Cindy had tried to run away from me across the street.  I guess she didn't see anything so she started crossing, and then a car came speeding by and hit Cindy.  I tried helping her, honest.  I took her to the hospital and they said that she wouldn't make it.  I know I did wrong and I'm sorry that it caused pain and even death.  I didn't mean to hurt her and I am very sorry.  You're right, Mindy, I should be put in jail."  The officers agreed, cuffed him and hauled him away.  He did go to jail, but they shortened his jail-time to three months.  After the three months was up, Jonathan went to the Mindy and Thomas' house and apologized again.  He couldn't make it up to them, but he tried his best at making up the death to them.  His restraining order was lifted and he and Cindy's parents had a funeral for her and invited Tibby.  The funeral servicewent well and everyone went home.
Mindy and Thomas had another litttle girl of their own and made sure nothing would ever happen to her.  Jonathan came and visited often, since they had become family friends.  As for Tibby, the summer was almost up, so she hung out with her friends and family for the rest of it.  A month after then, school started and her normal life began once again.
