Ghost School by Melissa Graham
Thistlewood School may have looked quiet at night but when the
tumultuous children arrived in the morning, it was more like an immense circus except for
the crumbling buildings and the shattered windows. The fragile tiles would always slip off
the feeble rooftops and bizarre incidents were repeatedly occurring in the unstable
school.
To make matters worse, the school belonged to a ghastly, gruesome
headmaster named Mr Dowd. Sometimes he would force you to clean his filthy floor with a
grotty toothbrush and if you were really naughty he would lock you in the dirty, dusty
dungeon. Once, he pressured someone into scrubbing his boots clean and moaned when he
noticed one speck of mud on the bottom.
Eamon, Khia and Mia weren't so frightened of him, as he had never punished them. In fact,
the harsh Headmaster, under any circumstances, had never attempted to communicate with the
three best friends.
As the enthusiastic children covered the playground, the three best
friends were obscured in the secluded corner feeling rejected by passing by students. They
didn't mind at all as they enjoyed keeping themselves to themselves. They despised the
disrespect of the dull children.
They were relieved when the bell rang, causing them to jump out of
their skin, but that relief was slowly withdrawn when the three best friends realized
their next lesson was Geography. To make matters worse, they had been put back a year
twice! So instead of being in year ten, they remained in year eight.
"Listen girls!" exclaimed Eamon, unexpectedly. "Let's bunk Ms Hide's
lesson. Mr Dowd won't be in until lunch and all the teachers will be teaching!"
The girls hesitated. "Come on, it's not like Ms Hide will notice!
She acts as if we aren't there, anyway!" continued Eamon.
"Well, I suppose it will be a bit of fun", replied Khia,
excitedly.
Although uncertain, Mia followed, whilst straightening her glasses.
They waited, patiently, behind a subsiding wall for about five minutes,
until everyone was in their lesson, then crept towards the deserted library. Once there,
Khia jumped behind the desk and began impersonating the school librarian. She noticed a
large, red button underneath the desk and without thinking, she hit it, unsure what would
happen. Nothing. Suddenly Mia and Eamon disappeared.
"Khia, Khia!" mumbled Eamon in a muffled voice.
It took a while for Khia to realize that Eamon and Mia had fallen down
a considerably vast opening in the floorboards. It seemed very bottomless and empty but
Khia, wanting to aid her friends, still hurtled down the hole.
She landed with a thud and Mia and Eamon lifted her. By the look of the place, no one had
been there for a long time. The smell of dusty mould curled through the air, causing the
three to hold their noses.
"Yuck! What is that smell?" asked Khia "And what are all
these books".
"You're the one who got us into this mess!" argued Eamon,
angrily.
"Well, it was your idea to bunk!" screeched Khia.
"Listen you two! Where is arguing going to get us?" resolved
Mia, calmly.
When they were all settled, they began to observe the massive room,
full of dusty books and tattered sheets of paper, still unable to figure out where the
awful smell was coming from. Ancient books lay on unstable shelves and dust flew through
the air like magic carpets. The floorboard creaked, every step they took.
Suddenly, a large book fell from a high shelf labeled 'DEATH'.
"Oh my God!" gasped Mia, lethargic from all of the
excitement.
Khia grabbed the book and began scouring through it, afraid what she
would encounter inside.
